How Long Does Gerald Kaufman Get For “Attempting” To Claim £8000 For A TV?

The Daily Telegraph

By Gordon Rayner, Chief Reporter

7:00AM BST 16 May 2009

The former environment minister was asked to attend a meeting with officials from the parliamentary fees office to discuss details of another claim relating to £28,834 of work on the kitchen and bathroom at his London flat.

He told them that the work was necessary because he was “living in a slum”, though his second home, off Regent’s Park, is in one of the most fashionable areas of the capital. He was eventually reimbursed for £15,329.

On one occasion he asked a civil servant “why are you querying these expenses?” and on another threatened to make a complaint unless a dispute was settled by noon on the day in question. In one document, an official in the fees office noted that invoices Sir Gerald had submitted took him to “within 6p” of his annual limit. He also claimed £1,262 for a gas bill that was £1,055 in credit.

Between 2001 and 2008 the Manchester Gorton MP, one of the Labour party’s longest-serving members, claimed a total of £115,109 in additional costs allowances on his London flat, which he owns outright. In June 2006, he submitted a claim for three months’ expenses totalling £14,301.60, which included £8,865 for a Bang & Olufsen Beovision 40in LCD television.

  5. Tsk, tsk – there was me believing that the judiciary was independent of the legislature. Yet here we have magistrates responding to the exhortations of politicians, who are themselves responding to what the tabloid press tells them is the public mood, and adjusting their sentences accordingly 🙄

How naive of me to believe what I was taught in school about the ‘separation of power’ in the UK !!! 😉

  6. I think it is important to draw a distinction between those with genetic affinity to wealth and any false sense of entitlement held by the plebian sect. As one of Kaufman’s early ancestors, Isaac, outlined in his work ‘How to live under Pharoah and still have something’ (which remained unpublished following the author’s demise after falling down steps at a Royal Guard outpost) the Art of billing customers must never be confused with outright theft.

Whilst critics have pointed to the apparent paradox of Gerald’s Fabian membership and the dirt in his private life, he remains adamant that such hypocrisy as he may be accused of, should in no way compromise his endeavours to compensate for a genetic handicap and an unfortunate ubringing within an avaricious culture.

  7. Yes major double standards atm. The person who got 6months for the 3.50 water equates to 1850yrs for the 13k hazel blears ‘thought she could get away with.
I’m sure there’s loads of better comparisons.
I don’t condone the mass destruction just for the sake of it.
IF- the police explained their actions to the family b4 5hrs meantime barricade themselves inside the station- I think things could’ve and should’ve been stopped a lot earlier… we would be having a discussion about policing and not broken pockets of society.

  8. I am so disillusioned with our justice system it’s unreal. A hard working mother of two gets six months in jail for being given some shorts. He gets off easily for fraud? How the fuck is an £8,000 TV an essential?

  9. And today, a sicko copper who had more than 50,000 images of children being sexually abused (1400 of them of the worst category) on his computer, and distributed them, got 27 months.

Maybe freemasonry and paedophilia go hand-in-hand?
