Nick Clegg – The Boy’s Own Politician
It’s a film script, a comicbook cartoon, a dazzling adventure story. It lifts the spirit and refreshes the soul. It’s a politician you can believe in! It’s Nick Clegg!
I hope so. I really, really do. I hope I am living through a huge moment in history when two bright, inspirational leaders take the helm of HMS Great Britain and steer us through the storm to calm waters and the broad sunlit uplands beyond.
Nick Clegg’s speech today was as inspirational as they come. If history views him kindly then this speech will rank with Churchill, Disraeli, Martin Luther King, Obama. He deserves our trust. If he has got it wrong or can’t deliver there will be plenty of time for recriminations and to return to dull cynicism.
For now, let us believe.
Clegg Close To Cocking It Up
I’m really fearful that Clegg is close to cocking it all up. He’s managed to retain a great deal of goodwill throughout this election campaign but now he seems to be losing the plot. He promised the country that he would deal with the Tories first but in fact he’s been double dealing. This will rightly infuriate those on the Tory right who have gone much, much further than might have been expected. Clegg needs to get back to the principled position he originally held and do the deal with the Tories. If not there will be no bigger loser than Clegg himself.
Britain Has A New Leader
What a magnificent, statesmanlike, exciting and constructive statement from David Cameron. He and Nick Clegg stand head and shoulders above the putrid, stubborn and dishonest loser Gordon Brown.
Brown must resign now. He is yesterday’s man.
Maybe I was wrong. Perhaps this result will prove to have been a good thing if it produces the sort of constructive politics that Cameron and Clegg have both now demonstrated.
I Agree With Nick But I’m Voting For Dave
In the last general election I wrote “no suitable candidate” across my ballot paper. In the European elections I voted UKIP.
Fundamentally I’m a Tory but if I became prime minister tomorrow, I’d implement the following policies on Friday:
- Withdraw our troops from Afghanistan
- Nationalise electricity, gas, water, telephone and broadband provision
- Introduce the Lib Dem’s £10,000 tax policy
- Introduce the Lib Dem’s policy on the separation of retail and investment banks
- Start a phased withdrawal from the EU retaining a free trade policy.
- Legalise all drugs. Introduce strict regulation and taxation
- Break off diplomatic relations with Israel until it ends the Gaza blockade and stops new settlements.
It is sad but true that a Lib Dem vote is a wasted vote. Not only that but it is extremely dangerous. It could result in the very worst possible outcome to this election if there is no overall majority but Labour has the most seats and Gordon Brown remains prime minister. This would be an unmitigated disaster of horrendous proportions. If this happens then I predict at least as much chaos as is happening in Greece. In fact we could well be in for riots in the streets whoever wins.
The only hope for the future, far from perfect that it will be, is a Conservative government.
Dermot’s X Factor Interviews
Dermot O’Leary’s interviews with David Cameron and Nick Clegg, tonight on BBC3, were incisive and inspiring in a way that none of the other debates or interviews have been.
Perhaps precisely because they were aimed at a 16-24 year old audience, these were forward looking, exciting programmes. Look to your laurels, Paxman, Dimbleby, et al.
I think Dermot will tear Gordon Brown to pieces next week.
There Are Lies, Damned Lies And Then There’s Gordon Brown
How he has the bare faced cheek to claim that he’s been saying “for months” that the banks should have been more tightly regulated!! The man has been incredible for some time but even for him this latest, astonishing volte face is truly astounding.
Our Prime Minister is nothing short of a liar. When he appears tonight on the first ever great TV debate let us hope that his true colours are revealed. Messrs Cameron and Clegg have the opportunity to drive home the coffin nails into Gordon Brown’s premiership. Let them strike hard and true. The country needs relief from this shabby little man, his putrid ideas and his shameful politics.
