Tories Need Electoral Reform Too

leave a comment »

I would have thought it was obvious after the unsatisfactory result of this election that Tories need electoral reform too.  It should definitely not be a dealbreaker between the Tories and Lib Dems.  In fact, I’ll go further, David Cameron should offer a referendum on the issue – why not?

A redrawing of constituency boundaries so that each seat has the same number of voters would in itself be a more proportional form of representation.  I also think that a fixed term of office would lead to fairer and more sensible government.

David Cameron has an opportunity now to become prime minister and usher in a new, fairer, brighter politics.   If he misses this chance then he will have let down the British people as well as the Tory party and himself.  Brown, at last, thank God, is gone.  At least we can be grateful for that and, yes, eventually, he did find some dignity in his defeat.

If The BBC Exit Poll Is Right…

…then it is a travesty and a tragedy for the Lib Dems.

The Great British Menu

with 3 comments

I love food programmes.  It’s probably because I’m a glutton.  Saturday Kitchen is a must.  I organise every Saturday morning around it.  James Martin has done a wonderful job with his show.   I remember how excruciatingly awkward he was to begin with.  Now he’s become the epitome of the accomplished, almost suave TV chef.   I love it.

Masterchef?  It’s the one.  The music.  The relentless driving beat.  I don’t know whether it’s house or trance or what.   It’s clubbing.  Its addictive.  It’s the one.  I’m totally, utterly,  obsessed, enslaved.   It’s much, much better than sex!

Now the Great British Menu is back with its useful, early evening slot.  It sets me up for a TV night in.  There’s the lovable, opinionated Matthew Fort, the sweet and incisive Oliver Peyton and, forgive me ma’am, the royal, dignified, supreme Prue Leith.  These are the judges but it’s the boys (with one exception) in the kitchen that make the show.  The new format, where an uber TV-chef pre-judges three pretenders, works very well.  It’s a triumph really because they’ve taken their material and hugely padded it out, yet It’s better for it.  This is the ultimate lesson in how to make great TV in a recession.

The rivalry and camaraderie between the contestants is an extraordinary combination and really seems to get the best out of each of them.

Apart from the election, it’s the most entertaining thing on television.

Vince Cable For Tory Chancellor

Mr Common Sense

What wonderful common sense and wisdom was heard from Vince Cable at the Lib Dem’s conference today.  Here is the only man justified in saying “I told you so” about the financial crisis and the only man who seems to offer a plan for the future that makes sense and has integrity.

The Lib Dems will not form the next government.  Neither will Labour.  Whatever wobbles and uncertainties there are in the next couple of months I have no doubt that David Cameron will be our next prime minister.  He would do well, if necessary, to get down on his knees and beg Vince Cable to join his cabinet.  Not only would that be great news for the country but, I believe, it would be great news for the Tories.  If David can’t see that then I suspect his wife probably can.  I am certain that Samantha will be a great asset in the election campaign.  She could start by inviting Mr & Mrs Cable to dinner.

Khamenei Defiles Islam

An Evil Old Man

Evil Hypocrite

When you see an old man like Ayatollah Ali Khamenei talking such absolute drivel it is tempting to think that he is either senile or mad.  Clearly though, the truth is he is simply bad.  His conduct will do more to set back the cause of Islam than almost anything else.  This is why the name of Islam is shamed throughout the world.  If followers of the Prophet can not find some honest, intelligent and sincere spokesmen then their religion and the culture that surrounds it will be forever condemned as a medieval anachronism.

His speech today is a catastrophic mistake and misjudgment but it will lead to a better future.  I believe it will enrage the educated and intelligent people of Iran.  He obviously believes that the people are stupid and that they can be bullied or terrorised into accepting that the elections were fair and that there is no corruption.  It would be easier to claim that he is deluded but no, I think this man is simply evil and it would be in the best interest of all mankind, Muslim, Christian, Jew, Hindu, non-believer if he were gone.

Who will rid us of this turbulent priest?

Where Are The Police – Again?

Mob Rule

Mob Rule

In one of the most tightly policed locations in the country a mob is allowed to shout down, assault and drive off Nick Griffin, the new BNP MEP without any police intervention?   See the full story here.

I am very, very frightened by this.  Much more so than by the election of a couple of idiots to a stage where they will be able to make even bigger fools of themselves.

Sir Paul Stephenson! Are you a man or a mouse, a police officer or a political servant?

Man Or Mouse?

Man Or Mouse?

You seem to act under ruling party political direction when it is unnecessary – Damian Green.  You fail to act when it is crucial – banker robbers, MPs expenses, police violence and today’s blatant blind eye.

Keep The Church Out Of Elections

I do not support the BNP but I defend its right to state its case and campaign for election.  I have considerable sympathy with its complaint that it is not considered racist to have a black association or a Muslim group but the BNP is branded racist for seeking to represent the white British.  This is unjust.

It’s fair game for other politicians to attack the BNP but the call made today by the Church?  This is outrageous.   While there are certainly many good Christians and Church members, this week we have had to listen to the horrific truth of child abuse by the Church in Ireland.  Only the following day the new Catholic Archbishop Nichols of Westminster is enthroned and makes the disgraceful judgment that it was courageous for some of the priests to confess their dreadful crimes.

The most eloquent advice I have ever heard on the subject of the Church comes from Messrs Crosby, Stills and Nash:

“Too many people have died in the name of Christ for anyone to heed the call”

Too much evil and wickedness has been perpetrated across hundreds of years by the Church for it to have any relevance or role in our elections.  Stick to pastoral work with individuals and you’re entitled to promote your individual doctrine and beliefs but stay out of the business of parliament and government.
