Blackberrying In August In Torrential Rain.
Surely it’s too early for blackberries? The hedgerows near me have been brimming with fruit since July. I’m easily collecting a couple of pounds on every hour’s walk.
As for the rain, it’s par for the course these days. The way the jet stream has been behaving the last few years it’s becoming normal and I predict an Indian Summer. Come September when the lunatics return to the asylum at Parliament we’ll all be sweltering in the sun.
Follow all the weather forecasts you want. I can give you a money back guarantee you won’t get a more accurate prediction.
Another Magnificent Masterpiece From Masterchef.
For year, after year, after year it is my favourite telly. The perfect antidote to days full of stress and idiots. Nothing but nothing enables me to turn off and immerses me as completely as Masterchef in all its variants but this one, the main one, that turns amateur cooks into professional chefs is the best.
As usual I’ll stick my neck out and pick the winner. I’m usually wrong but my controversial choice this year is Saliha.
Breakfast Of Champions 3.
This is the classic breakfast for me. It’s essential to serve it with HP sauce, genuine HP sauce (I know of no acceptable own brand substitutes).
Split, season and bake large tomatoes at about 150 C for about 20 mins. It has to be smoked bacon for me, fried until it just starts to go crispy in some places. Serve on thick, buttered, granary toast.
Tip. You don’t get what you pay for with bacon, particularly not in supermarkets. Those expensive, flat trays where six rashers of bacon are artfully displayed alongside various logos, brands and quality claims are mainly a rip off. A proper butcher is of course best and sliced thickly but I use Sainsbury’s value brand, smoked back bacon. It’s excellent value and very tasty.
Breakfast Of Champions 2.
A recent invention of mine.
Bake the black pudding at about 150 C for about 10 minutes. Chop roughly and fry in butter for a few moments in the omelette pan to give crispy edges. Add as many well-seasoned, beaten eggs as you wish and cook for a couple of minutes. You can fold it or serve it flat and cut into sections.
Remember to give the dogs a little taste, it’s only fair.
Tip. Please keep the inside of the omelette as runny as you can, it makes all the difference. After decades of experience as a black pudding connoisseur, I buy mine from Framptons of Bridport. It’s described as ‘local’ but it isn’t that local because it’s made in Poole – but it is the business!
Breakfast Of Champions.
I decided I deserved a treat this morning.
Kippers pan-fried in butter and a touch of olive oil, two very soft poached eggs, served with hot, buttered, granary toast and strong tea. The dogs get a mouthful each and then are allowed to clean the plate and the pan.
Bliss.
Tip. Choose your kippers wisely, buy them from a proper fishmonger and season generously with black pepper.
