Cannabis Embarrassment At The Home Office

with 75 comments

The re-scheduling of Sativex, the cannabis tincture marketed by GW Pharmaceuticals is causing huge embarrassment at the Home  Office.

Everybody’s been able to go along with the white lie up to now that Sativex is some sort of highly complex, super scientific, super medicine containing cannabinoids. True enough, GW Pharma has put millions into development and testing in order to jump through the hoops the government has demanded.  At the end of the day though, all Sativex consists of is a tincture, an alcohol extract of herbal cannabis.  It’s made simply by gently heating a blend of herbal cannabis in ethanol and then adding a little peppermint oil to taste.

An Honourable Man?

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved Sativex for the treatment of muscle spasticity in MS.  I understand that an approval for the treatment of cancer pain is expected shortly.  The problem for the Home Office is that Sativex now has to be re-scheduled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.   Cannabis is presently in schedule one as having no medicinal value.  The Advisory Council on the Misuse of  Drugs (ACMD) has recommended this week that Sativex be in schedule four, alongside  a variety of minor tranquilisers.  However, as the ACMD says, “it will not be appropriate to refer to “Sativex”, which is a proprietary name, in any amendment to the misuse of drugs regulations, and that a suitable description of the relevant component(s) of “Sativex” will have to be scheduled.”

This is going to be tough for James Brokenshire to face up to.  GW specifies that Sativex contains approximately equal proportions of THC and CBD but that’s not the whole truth.  It also contains as many as 400 other chemical compounds which occur naturally in the plant including at least 85 cannabinoids (nobody is exactly sure how many cannabinoids there are or their effects).  You see there’s not really any other accurate way of describing Sativex except to call it cannabis.  So how can Mr Brokenshire possibly move it to schedule four?  He endlessly repeats the propaganda that “there are no medicinal benefits in cannabis”.

Either Mr Brokenshire has to come clean and accept that his past position was incorrect or he has to promote some further deception.

I trust he will prove to be an honourable man.

LibDem Conmen Should Be Expelled From Parliament

Liars, Conmen And Cheats

I support the tuition fee proposals.  They seem very fair to me and I can’t see that any prospective student can have any complaint about the terms offered.

However, if you’re an MP and before the election you signed a pledge to vote against any increase in tuition fees then you have no choice.  It doesn’t matter if you’re a minister or if the economic situation is worse than you thought it was.  This is black and white.  It’s clear cut.  There can be no argument.  If you break your signed commitment then you have to go.

If you seek to evade your commitment or fudge the issue then you compound your crime.  And I see no reason why it should not be a crime.  In civil law it is a clear breach of contract but it is much more serious than that.  It is obtaining a seat in parliament on false pretences.  It wasn’t a vague promise made in the heat of the election campaign.  It was a written agreement.

Nick Clegg, Vince Cable and all their cronies who have broken their word should be frogmarched out of parliament and charged with criminal deception.  They should all go to jail.  Not for a long time.  Six months will do but each and every one of them is a proven liar, conman and cheat.  They have no honour.

Unless parliament takes this action to preserve its integrity, then its reputation will sink even lower.  It sets the most appalling example to the country and any MP who allows this scandal to persist without action is an accessory after the fact.

Shame on you, you weak and pathetic cowards.  You disgrace yourselves and our country.

Family Trauma

I’m rather proud of the two brothers.  Be as cynical as you like, it must have been a dreadful time for both of them.  They have behaved as gentlemen, with great honour and dignity.  They have  risen above the snide provocations of the press.  I thought David’s determination to stand well clear to give Ed a clear run was a noble and sincere act.  He will return as an elder statesman.  He will become an ever more important figure in British politics.

I’m more than happy to see a new broom in Ed.  The Labour Party needs a fresh start.  I think he’ll try to be his own man.  He’ll try to shed all the baggage and forge his own path.  It’ll be interesting to see what happens.  I wish him well because I do believe that a strong opposition is a good thing. The inside information I have, from the heart of Ed’s campaign team, is that in reality he’s way to the right of David.  We’ll see!

The Red Arrows

Portland Harbour 2010

At five o’clock yesterday evening I stood on top of White Horse hill and watched the Red Arrows perform for Weymouth carnival.

From this perfect vantage point I could see them soar a mile high above me then swoop down five or six miles to my left (east), climb again and explode out of formation five or six miles to my right (west).

Portland Harbour 1940

They say the Red Arrows are the best recruiting sergeant that the RAF could possibly have.   That is if we have the RAF for very much longer.  It looks likely that soon we will have just one integrated service.  That makes sense though.   In modern times we need an integrated approach using land, sea and air.

Nothing can extinguish or outshine the honour of the RAF or the Army or the Navy, whatever the future holds.  As we remember the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the Red Arrows flew yesterday through the same skies that our young heroes did then in their Spitfires and Hurricanes.   Nothing can ever repay our debt to those who enabled Britain to stand alone for more than a year against the Nazis.  It is no exaggeration to say that through those dark days they and Britain saved the world.   See brilliant BBC story here.

We shall honour them for ever.

Send British Troops To Gaza. Nazi Israel Must Be Stopped.

with 30 comments

The Israeli pirate assault on aid ships seeking to relieve the besieged people of Gaza is just the latest atrocity from this vile and inhuman regime.

Stormtroopers Against Saints

Israel now represents just as much a threat to civilisation as did Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.  It constantly flouts UN resolutions, commits war crimes and we are certain that it has weapons of mass destruction.   The civilised world needs to step in.  Israel must be stopped at all costs and this is a cause that it is worth our troops dying for.  It is more urgent and pressing than Afghanistan.  British troops would be better employed in crushing the evil Israelis than they are in fighting the Taliban.  If we do not stand up against the great Nazi evil that Israel has become then we have no right to call ourselves civilised

We should send in the Navy and smash the Israeli blockade, open up a sea corridor to allow aid and relief in.  HMS Daring, with the most advanced anti-aircraft weaponry in the world,  should stop tootling up and down the south coast and blast the Israeli air force out of the sky.   The time for negotiating with and appeasing this pariah state is past.  We must take decisive action now.

Israel

I am not anti-semitic because Arabs are Semites just as much as Jews.  I am not anti-Jewish but I don’t understand the relationship betwen the state of Israel and the Jewish religion.  I am anti-Israel and all men of honour, decency and common sense must be.  Its conduct in Gaza and throughout Palestine is beyond any justification.  Its conduct is always disproportionate.  Its whinging about the little fireworks that the Palestinians shoot in is pathetic.  If  my country was being oppressed and bullied then I would react at least the same.  Suicide bombers against Israeli targets are equally as justified and heroic as any suicide mission against the Nazis in the Second World War.

War Criminal

This may well be my generation’s equivalent of the Spanish Civil War.  Give me a chance to fight against the fascist Israelis and I don’t see how my conscience could deny it.  They need to be given a dose of their own medicine and pulverised into submission, forced to withdraw from the settlements, forced to abandon their entire national strategy and policy.  It is clear that the world made a great mistake in establishing the state of Israel.  Perhaps we should have left them to their fate.

Prime Minister Netanyahu is presently in Canada, a nation famed for its defence of freedom and justice.  He should be immediately arrested and detained as a war criminal.

The onus is now on us.   Obama and Cameron must step up to the plate and condemn this action outright.  US and UK forces must join in this most urgent mission.   Leave the rest of Europe to dither as usual.  We must get on with the job.

Truth, Justice And The Scottish Way

Kenny MacAskill, the Scottish Justice  Minister, can hold his head high.  I believe he will go down in history with William Wallace,  Robert the Bruce and other great Scottish heroes.

As for the putrid, small-minded contribution from Robert Mueller, the Director of the FBI, I say get back to Hicksville with Jethro and your cousins and take your thuggish, corrupt opinions with you.  Since it lost its way under George Bush, America is in no position to lecture anyone about justice.  The proud and wonderful principles expressed in its constitution have been besmirched by Bush, Guantanamo Bay, illegal rendition and, as far as the FBI is concerned, we can go all the way back to the 50s and McCarthyism to see how much justice matters to it.

America has many uncomfortable questions to answer about its own complicity in the story of Pan Am flight 103.  Scotland has behaved with honour and courage.

Footballers, Politicians, Bankers, Lowlifes

If you seek a moral compass or example in Britain do not turn to our leaders, nor to those who are the most highly paid, richest or with the greatest responsibilities.  Turn instead to those who have endured the most, who have striven for goals and ambitions with true honour and integrity.  Turn to men like Major Phil Packer, who completed the London Marathon on crutches and has raised nearly £1 million for Help For Heroes.

The disgusting spectacle by the Chelsea whore footballers; spoilt, fawned over and supported by the Russian Mafia.  Their conduct is ignored by the FA, which once pretended to stand for discipline and good behaviour in football but looks the other way when the serious money is involved.

The ignominious disgrace of so many MPs to which, to his eternal shame, the Speaker has profoundly failed to respond.  The calculated fraud, thievery and deception of the banking superclass who have been allowed to walk away with their ill gotten gains.  All these people – not as a group but as individuals – Drogba, Brown, Goodwin – should be named, shamed and punished.  If we let this behaviour pass without sanction then we let down men like Major Packer.  We let down men and women of honour in sport, politics, business and everyday life who try their hardest and invest their integrity in what they do.

Who is left to take the lead?  This huge problem creates a vacancy,  the most important  job in the country but I fear that we do not have a Barack Obama in Britain.  I fear that Rome is burning.
